Koine Schachter was born in Ciudin, Bukovina in 1911. Koine had 8 siblings, but she was the youngest so she only grew up with one sister and her parents. However, her mother died in 1930. During the war, Koine, her sister, her dad and her dads new wife survived the harsh conditions of Transnistria together. After the war, Koine met her husband, Josef Rogel, and the 2 of them immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1949, along with the rest of Koine’s family. Koine started writing A Letter to the Ukraine during 1941. It was supposed to be a letter to her family. However, she finished writing this in 1989. The memoir is now part of Before All Memory Is Lost: Women’s Voices From The Holocaust. Koine died on July 6, 2002.
