Ilonka(Helen) Rodak-Izso was born in Abaujker, Czechoslovakia in 1915 but she spent most of her childhood in Kosice. In 1944, Helen and her family were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. After the war, Helen immigrated to Toronto, Canada. She became fluent in english and worked as a library assistant at the University of Toronto’s Robarts Library for 20 years. She also loved to bake, music and being with her family. Helen wrote Amid the Burning Bushes which is part of Confronting Devastation: Memoirs of Holocaust Survivors from Hungary. She died in 1998.
