In Search of Light

Martha Salcudean was born in Cluj, Romania in 1934. In 1944, Martha and her family were lined up to go on the cattle cars to Auschwitz, but instead escaped and ended up at Bergen-Belsen. After the war, Martha went back to Romania, however now Romania was under a Communist dictatorship. Martha immigrated to Canada in 1976 and was a professor at the University of Ottawa before she became head of mechanical engineering at University of British Columbia. She earned 3 honorary doctorates and many prestigious awards for her contributions to science and engineering. She died in 2019.
