David Newman was born in Chmielnik, Poland in 1919. Before the war, David was a musician and a teacher. After being torn from his family at the start of the war, David was sent to various labour camps before ending up in Buchenwald. Here, he was recruited by the resistance to protect the Jewish children. He teaches them and sings songs for them throughout his time there. After the war, David, his wife Anna and their son Jack, immigrated to Paris before immigrating to Toronto, Canada in 1951. Here, David was a performer in Yiddish theatre productions. He also co-founded the Kol Yisroel congregation at the Borochov Centre. He died in 2002.
