Liana Millu was born on December 21, 1914 in Pisa, Italy. Her last name at birth was orginally Millul, but she changed it to Millu for her author name. Liana was raised by her grandparents and spent most of her life in Genoa, Italy. She worked as a journalist for II Telegrafo and as a school teacher. Liana joined the Italian partisans in 1943 which was a part of World War II resistance fighting. However, she was arrested and deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1944. She survived the camp and returned to Italy to become and author. She wrote an autobiography in 1947 called Smoke Over Birkenau, whch tells stories about the women around her in Auschwitz and the horrors that all of them went through and how they all suffered. She wrote a few other books during her lifetime before dying in Genoa, Italy on February 6, 2005.
